Therapeutic Guidelines Summary Table 2025
This table was created by Therapeutic Guidelines to summarise the evidence about the management of common conditions in primary care. This is an excellent resource that could be used alongside clinical judgement to avoid unnecessary antibiotic use and, if required, promote narrow-spectrum therapy.
Please note the following adapted recommendations from Therapeutic Guidelines:
- Prescribers should evaluate the benefit–risk profile of antibiotic therapy for each patient, considering factors such as potential drug interactions and adverse effects. For each patient, consider potential adverse effects and drug interactions as part of benefit-risk assessment for antibiotic therapy.
- For detailed, current recommendations, including second-line treatment options and guidance for special patient groups (e.g., patients with penicillin allergy or renal impairment), refer to Therapeutic Guidelines.
- For conditions and indications not included in this summary table, consult Therapeutic Guidelines for further advice.
- If a recommended antibiotic is unavailable due to a shortage, refer to the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care’s Antimicrobial Shortages – Clinician Guidance factsheet for general management recommendations.
- To identify current antibiotic shortages, check the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) Medicine Shortage Reports Database.
